Outside of the Dinner Party |
Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party is a monumental work of art that represents over 1000 women in history with 39 represented by place settings. To add there are another 999 names are inscribed in the Heritage Floor underneath the monumental table. As my weekends are filled with my very busy work schedule, I was not able to attend the Dinner Party with the class. I decided to go with a friend instead, before one of my work shifts. The museum's design and structure was so beautiful on the outside, unlike any other museum I’ve been too. Stepping inside I saw enormous lines by the admissions tickets, along with a lot of out of country tourists. It always intrigued me how much other nationalities and cultures our so and cultures are so invested and fascinated by the history of the United States the history of the United States. Unfortunately, I was not able to physically step foot inside the Dinner Party. With my luck, it was under construction and the security guard on the post had forbidden me from entering. Instead, I tried taking a picture in front of the doors as proof that I had actually visited the Brooklyn Museum. Once I took my phone out and was about to take a few pictures, the security guard got pretty infuriated. She began to raise her voice at me exclaiming that no pictures were allowed to be taken. I, as well, was very angry at this point as I had commuted all the way from the Jersey Shore in order to get this project done. I calmly explained to her that I was not leaving without taking pictures of the exhibit, which led into a heated verbal altercation. To try to deescalate the situation I even suggested that she herself, or any of the other employees go in and take a few pictures for me, but she was not having it. Luckily, I stood my ground and was granted my singular picture (in which I look extremely irritated). Surprisingly, I was not alone in this as a cute old couple actually got into a confrontation with the same security guard as well. I was ready to jump in again but i decided to distress and go on and continue the rest of my trip.

Scripture of the Book of the Dead |
To try to make the most of the trip, I was intrigued by the Egyptian part of the museum as I myself am Egyptian. I decided to go back to my roots and explore the Egyptian Collection and the Mummy Chamber. According to the description the Mummy Chamber included more than 170 objects of ancient Egyptian material exploring complex rituals related to mummification. Ancient Egyptians had a belief that the body must be preserved in order to ensure eternal life. Preserving the body is said to have provided a home for the soul. There were so many pieces of great Ancient Egyptian Art, over 1200 to be exact. They consisted of objects including sculptures, paintings, and pottery. My favorite piece out of the collection had to be the Scripture of the Book of the Dead. Unexplainable I found this extremely intriguing and you can really see the history within the scriptures appearance. It is unique in the fact that it is also inscribed on both sides. Another piece that really intrigued me was the coffin of Osiris, God of the Dead. The outside of the coffin was designed so delicately and specifically depicting Osiris’s journey to the afterlife, finally arriving in the next world. I’ve been to many museums in Egypt before and the Brooklyn Museum did an exceptional job mimicking the style of how Egyptian Art is presented and depicted. Overall the trip to the Brooklyn Museum was definitely a trip I would take again. My friend and I both had a wonderful time exploring Ancient Egyptian history. Hopefully next time I will be able to actually see the Dinner Party.
