Renaissance: shift from religious scene to the individual portrait
Introducing Portraits:
Self Portrait of Sofonisba Anguissola 1558
  • The appearance of the portrait came about the middle of the century. "It combined subject and patron in images which showed worldly position, identity, wealth, and social standing and refocused attention on woman's costume, demeanor, and material embellishment" (Chadwick 75).  
  • Through marriage and family women became a sign of wealth and honor which defined social prestige. These women were painted to show off their husbands, they're looks displayed  acquired property. before signing a contract they gazed at it, and they would also look away to show their submission and virtue. Lastly, portraits of male artist showed off their social, political, and or professional role.

Painting was used to empasize Giovanna's role as a decorous piece of her husband's lineage
The portrait is commemorative because she died during her pregnancy.

Sofonisba Anguissola:
Opened the possibility of painting to women as a socially accepted profession. She was either criticized or praised by her critics and was either lacking skill in drawing and was compared or equal to Titian in portraiture. Many of her painting were accredited by male artists.

Sofonisba Anguissola Portrait:
Sofonisba is shown to be the bigger draw of the picture, meaning that she understands how she exemplar of female achievement. Her mentor painted her to  show the lineage of her pupils and master and to also symbolize women as objects of representation.


Boy Bitten by Catfish-Given this image by Michelangelo to draw. It was difficult because she had to depict such emotions(the boys cry) .

  • The presentation ended with a mock interview between Sofonisba Anguissola and one of her critic.
  •   The class identified the difference between       taking a selfie and painting a portrait. Selfies are   modern day art that people use to identify   themselves. The difference between a male artist   and a female artist and if female artist are most   judged then male artists.
