Sara Ann Owens
Ana Mendieta was an artist known for her
"earth body" performance. At a very young age she was separated from
her family and became a refugee, so art became a way for her to express
herself. Her art work was centered around gender, race, geography, prejudice,
and violence. Ana used her body as a form of art, she was known to fill her
body with objects like rocks, twigs, flowers, and blood, which reflects the
picture above. The picture above is a reenactment by Ana of a fellow classmate
by the name of Sara Ann Owens who was raped and killed. This painting was shown
to express the terror of male sexual violence. Mendieta uses this piece to
showcase sexual abuse and violence, and used this piece as a way to hopefully
put an end to it. This particular piece allowed her to be more in tune with her
body and it also made her more confident in her artwork. Mendieta work connects
a lot with the Feminist art, because most of her art included women.
