Laura Callaghan's V&A Friday Late |
Laura Callaghan is a London-based artist who brings a colorful imagery of women to
life. Her bold choice of colors within each piece of art captures the audience’s
attention in a matter of moments. Callaghan claims to be inspired by other
artists, such as Stacey Rozich and Hellen Jo, as well as films or comics that convey
sadness, violence, or gore. In an interview on the website, “Creators,”
Callaghan identifies as a feminist, and her art truly reflects that identity. For instance,
a majority of her art depicts women engaging in acts that our society may label
as “masculine.” Although Callaghan does not overtly state the reasons why her
female characters appear “aggressive,” I believe it acts a symbol to empower
women to take a more dominant approach in their lives.
