Critical Artist Expression by Amrita Sher-Gil
Amrita Sher-Gil born in 1913 in India and was homeschooled in the art by her parents. She set up her individual style when she was a teenager, which is used self-portrait to express herself. Most of her paintings are describing her body, clothes, earing, and even her daily emotions. More importantly, the naked body always appears in her painting. This makes her painting more meanings beyond the image-break up the chain that imposed on the women in Indian society. In the 1900s, most of Indian was charged in colonists, and the culture of Indian is depressed. By the way, the painting of Amrita played the role in defending the oppression of the patriarchal society. By 1930's, she had developed a significant body of work which left an indelible mark on the Indian modern art scene which compromised predominantly of male artists. This is not only the progress of Amrita herself but also the progression of Indian society.
