Rosa Bonheur was a French painter and
sculptor. I did not know her before doing research and I specifically
chose her for the time period she lived in, 1822-1899, and for her
realist work, which I personally find to be beautiful. She moved to
Paris when she was 6 and resided there throughout her studies. As a
teenager she would visit the Louvre and copy the paintings of her
favorite artists, which include Nicholas Poussin and Peter Paul
Rubens. Her most famous pieces of art include “The Horse Fair”,
which is a oil on canvas painting, depicting the Paris horse market.
She painted it after visiting the market weekly for almost one and a
half years. It is currently in possession of the Metropolitan Museum
in New York.
Bonheur should be admired for her
resilience and defiance of the social norms during the 19th
century. Women where widely discouraged from pursuing education in
general, and especially in art. This however did not deter Bonheur
from her path and she proved that women could excel and share the
same recognition and success men do in this field. Her resilience opened the door for other women to follow her footsteps and become artists.
